Announcing our Community Project: “Queer Secret”

Queer Secret:  Western Regional 2011 Community Project

Western Regional LGBTQIA Conference 2011 will be compiling a community art project in efforts to build something for conference-goers to remember and share from the weekend.   In efforts to employ this year’s theme “Unchecked Boxes: The Faces Behind the Labels,” Berkeley’s Planning Committee hopes to compile our own version of PostSecret for the Community Project.

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard.  The original project, which is still going on today, was created by Frank Warren, a UC Berkeley alumnus, who posts select secrets on the PostSecret website and displays them in PostSecret books and museum exhibits.

The simple concept of the project was that completely anonymous people make or decorate a postcard and portray a secret that they had never previously revealed. No restrictions are made on the content of the secret; only that it must be completely truthful and must never have been spoken before. Entries range from admissions of sexual misconduct and criminal activity to confessions of secret desires, embarrassing habits, hopes and dreams. The secrets are meant to be empowering both to the author and to those who read it.

We encourage everyone to push themselves to share a part of them that goes unseen or that no one would expect to know about them.  You may either send the secret in to the below mailing address or we will have a dedicated space during the conference to creating your personal secrets.  In the end, we hope to submit the Secrets to Fred Warren as a community submission.

Queer Secrets can be mailed to the following address:

Gender & Equity Resource Center
202 Cesar Chavez Student Center
UC Berkeley
Berkeley, CA 94720

Or scanned and submitted via email to

We look forward to collecting your Secrets!
